Challenging the obstacles at the age of 96, Kerala woman scored 98 marks out of 100 in an examination conducted by the Kerala government. Karthyayini Amma, residing in Cheppad in Alappuzha district was the oldest student among a total of 43,330 students who appeared for the exam. She sat for this examination so that she could be considered a literate. She is the oldest person ever to crack the exam.
According to the results which were published on Wednesday, the woman scored 28 out of 30 in Mathematics, 30 out of 30 in reading and 30 out of 30 in writing. The reading and writing exams were conducted in Malayalam. This exam is a part of the ‘Aksharalaksham’ mission of the state government and is conducted to ensure the literacy percent of Kerala.
Karthyayini scored 98% marks and will now be considered a literate. She is also eligible to write the examination of the fourth standard next year. She is the first one to receive a merit certificate from the CM Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram. The 96-year-old never went to any school and was raised by her family who was a sweeper at temples. Currently, she lives in Cheppad with her daughter, granddaughter, and great-grandchildren.
Over a telephonic conversation, Amma said, “I am very happy to know I passed. But I am also a bit sad that I lost two marks. As long as I am healthy, I want to study more.”
Her granddaughter Sajitha said, “It was difficult for her to prepare for the exam because she had never held a pen in her life or tried to write anything. Her hand used to waver all the time. But she worked very hard.”
The teacher who helped Amma with all her preparation said that Amma was very happy to hear of her performance.
She said, “She is a very smart student and picks up letters very fast. She’s very good with memorizing poems. The thing that astounds me every time is that she never thinks about her age. It never crosses her mind that she’s 96. I cannot express how energetic she is.”
The village panchayat on Thursday will arrange a vehicle to take Karthyayini to the state capital Thiruvananthapuram for the Chief Minister’s program. Krishnan also said that she is very excited to see the CM.
