Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Warns India Over Indus Waters Treaty Suspension

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Warns India Over Indus Waters Treaty Suspension
  • PublishedApril 26, 2025

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has issued a fiery response to India’s move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty following the Pahalgam terror attack, calling it an unlawful action that threatens regional stability.

Speaking at a public rally, Bhutto-Zardari declared, “The Indus is ours and will remain ours. Either our water will flow through it, or their blood will.” He accused India of using the attack, which left 26 tourists dead, as a pretext to conceal internal governance failures and unjustly target Pakistan.

Signed in 1960, the Indus Waters Treaty governs water distribution between India and Pakistan across six rivers. Its suspension, Bhutto warned, would have dire consequences for Pakistan, where the waters irrigate 80% of agricultural land. He further accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “warmongering” and attempting to rewrite history.

“He says they are heirs to a civilisation thousands of years old, but that civilisation lies in Mohenjo Daro, in Larkana. We are its true custodians,” Bhutto asserted.

Bhutto is the second Pakistani leader to criticize PM Modi following his tough stance on terrorism. Modi had vowed to pursue terrorists “to the ends of the earth” and hold their backers accountable.

Bhutto, a former foreign minister, reiterated that Pakistan condemns all forms of terrorism but rejects India’s “unilateral and provocative” decision regarding the treaty.
