Mark Carney Wins Another Term as Canada’s PM Amid U.S. Tensions and Minority Government
  • PublishedApril 29, 2025

In a dramatic 2025 federal election, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals retained power but fell short of a majority, setting the stage for a challenging new term. Carney, a former central banker with no previous parliamentary experience, thanked Canadians for their support and vowed to defend the country’s sovereignty in the face of rising tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Carney warned supporters that the early months would be tough, highlighting looming trade battles with Washington after Trump imposed heavy tariffs on Canadian goods. “President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us,” Carney declared, promising Canadians that his government would fight back and win any trade war.

Despite a strong campaign from Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who quickly conceded defeat, the Liberals led or were elected in 164 districts compared to the Conservatives’ 147. Meanwhile, the New Democratic Party (NDP) suffered a major collapse, with leader Jagmeet Singh announcing plans to step down after severe losses.

The Canadian dollar rose slightly as markets reacted positively to Carney’s win, betting on stability amid global uncertainty. Notably, Carney also secured his first seat in Parliament, winning the Ontario riding of Nepean.

Trump’s provocative suggestion on polling day that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state stirred controversy and may have bolstered Carney’s final surge. As Canadians look ahead, Carney’s leadership will be tested as he navigates trade wars, national unity, and a fractured political landscape.
