PM Modi’s Historic Visit to Maldives: A New Chapter in India-Maldives Relations
  • PublishedJuly 25, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Maldives today to attend the island nation’s 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour, becoming the first foreign head of state to visit under President Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure. This marks PM Modi’s third visit to the Maldives and a significant step in re-energising diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Male.

After concluding his official trip to the United Kingdom, PM Modi was warmly received at Male International Airport by President Muizzu and senior cabinet members, including the Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, and Finance Minister. Streets of Male were adorned with Indian flags, vibrant banners, and posters welcoming the Prime Minister, while members of the Indian diaspora gathered in large numbers to cheer and wave the Tricolour.

During his two-day visit from July 25–26, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Muizzu, focusing on strengthening the Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. He will also inaugurate several India-supported development projects across the archipelago, reaffirming India’s commitment to regional cooperation and sustainable development in the Indian Ocean Region.

This visit signals a diplomatic reset, following a period of strained ties. In a departure statement, PM Modi expressed his hope to advance mutual goals of peace, prosperity, and stability. As both nations commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations, this visit sets a promising tone for the future of India-Maldives cooperation.
