Tsunami Alerts Issued Across U.S. Pacific Coast After Massive 8.8-Magnitude Earthquake Off Russia
The U.S. Pacific region is on high alert after a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s far eastern coast, prompting tsunami warnings and advisories across Alaska, Hawaii, California, Washington, and Oregon.
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency has issued an official Tsunami Warning, activating sirens and emergency shelters. Tsunami waves are expected to reach Hawaii around 1:15 AM ET (11:25 AM IST).
Alaska’s western Aleutian Islands have already begun witnessing the first tsunami waves. Kodiak expects wave activity around 12:20 AM ET, with southeastern Alaska anticipating arrival between 12:45 AM and 1:55 AM ET.
In California, the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California coastlines are under Tsunami Advisory. Waves could reach San Francisco by 3:40 AM ET (1:10 PM IST) and Southern California by 4:00 AM ET (1:30 PM IST). Officials warn of dangerous currents and urge the public to stay away from beaches and marinas.
Japan is also on high alert, with tsunami models showing potential risk zones across the Pacific.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the developments, urging caution and safety.
The Indian Consulate in San Francisco has advised Indian nationals to avoid coastal areas, move to higher ground, and stay updated through official alerts.
Authorities emphasize that tsunamis may arrive in multiple waves over hours. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow emergency guidelines.
