Ricky Ponting Denies Fake Quotes Amid Asia Cup Controversy

Ricky Ponting Denies Fake Quotes Amid Asia Cup Controversy
  • PublishedSeptember 17, 2025

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has strongly refuted false statements attributed to him on social media regarding the recent India-Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup. A fabricated quote circulating online suggested Ponting had criticised India and praised Pakistan for their conduct during the post-match handshake row.

Ponting clarified via X, stating, “I am aware of certain comments being attributed to me on social media. Please know that I categorically did not make those statements and indeed have made no public comment about the Asia Cup at all.” The cricketing legend urged fans and media to verify facts before sharing unverified content.

The controversy began on September 14 after reports claimed Indian players, including Suryakumar Yadav, did not shake hands with the Pakistani side following India’s seven-wicket win in Dubai. The incident escalated when the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) accused match referee Andy Pycroft of blocking the customary handshake between captains.

In protest, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi wrote to the International Cricket Council (ICC), demanding Pycroft’s removal. However, the ICC, after investigation, rejected the appeal. The PCB also suspended its Director of International Cricket Operations, Usman Wahla, for allegedly failing to address the situation.

As tensions continue to simmer, Ricky Ponting’s clarification highlights the dangers of misinformation spreading during sensitive cricketing rivalries. The Asia Cup, already a stage of intense competition, has once again been overshadowed by off-field controversies.
