Washington, D.C. — President Donald J. Trump today announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to halt India’s purchases of Russian oil as part of ongoing efforts to increase economic pressure on Moscow and end the war in Ukraine.

Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump said he received assurances from Prime Minister Modi that India would phase out Russian oil imports “within a short period of time,” calling the move “a big stop.” The President noted that this step demonstrates India’s willingness to work closely with the United States to promote stability and accountability in global energy markets.

The Trump administration has underscored its commitment to strengthening U.S.–India energy cooperation and ensuring fair trade practices. Discussions between Washington and New Delhi continue, with both sides emphasizing the need to safeguard energy security and consumer interests.

President Trump added that similar talks are underway with China and Japan to further restrict Russian energy exports. “We’re working with our partners to make sure Putin’s war machine is deprived of funding,” he said.

The administration reaffirmed that the U.S. remains committed to a free, fair, and transparent global energy market.
