Hong Kong Ends Rescue Operations After Deadly Residential Fire; Death Toll Nears 130
  • PublishedNovember 28, 2025

The Hong Kong government announced on Friday that rescue operations have concluded following the devastating fire at a residential building that broke out on Wednesday afternoon. The blaze, one of the worst in Hong Kong in decades, claimed the lives of 128 people, with around 200 still missing and 79 injured, according to Secretary for Security Chris Tang.

The fire engulfed a residential tower and required the deployment of over 1,000 firefighters to bring it under control after 24 hours. Despite containment, smoke continued to emerge from the site for two days, causing occasional flare-ups.

While rescue operations have formally ended, authorities confirmed that search efforts for the missing individuals will continue, and the death toll may rise as investigations proceed. Security Chief Tang emphasized that officials will “endeavor to force entry into all the units of the seven blocks concerned to ensure no additional casualties are found.”

Corruption Probe Launched
In the aftermath of the blaze, Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has launched an investigation into potential corruption related to the building’s renovation project. Three individuals, including directors and an engineering consultant from the construction company involved, have been arrested in connection with manslaughter charges.

Authorities continue to prioritize the safety of residents, while conducting a thorough examination of the building’s renovation records and safety compliance. The Hong Kong government reiterated its commitment to uncovering the cause of the fire and ensuring accountability for any negligence or misconduct.
