Led by Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) leader, Bhagwant Mann, hundreds of AAP workers have been water cannoned outside Punjab Chief Minister house in Chandigarh for holding massive protests over the hike in electricity rates. Sangrur MP was later arrested for organising these protests.
AAP is the main opposition in the Punjab cabinet and these protests come after Shiromani Akali Dal's (SAD) protests against Congress over the power tariff rates which were increased by 2.14 per cent for 2019-20 in May last year despite Punjab State Power Corporation Limited seeking a hike between 8 to 14 per cent.
The AAP members, who wanted to meet Amarinder Singh to submit a memorandum against the power hike, were stopped from getting any closer to Chief Minister's home. Chandigarh Police had already barricaded the road with the deployment of a huge force leading to the Chief Minister's residence.
AAP's Arvind Kejriwal is eyeing 2nd term in Delhi and since his party has been in power in the capital, they have been providing 50 per cent subsidy on power bills. The idea is to come good on its election promises which they did successfully in Delhi.
