According to one of the latest amendment to the rules of Transport Canada now baptized Sikhs are allowed to carry a 'kirpan' up to 6 cms in length on domestic and international flights. Though the rule also exempts as it is not applied for flights to the United States. Earlier this year the World Sikh Organization had stepped in and asked Transport Canada to adopt the international standard in order that baptized Sikhs carrying a kirpan could be accommodated. Elated over the decision, WSO President Mukhbir Singh said,
Baptized Sikhs in the United Kingdom and the Republic Of India are already allowed to carry kirpans of up to 6cm and 6.35cm respectively. This is a great example of Freedom of Religion and Sikhs around every corner of the world are appreciating this step.We welcome today’s announcement. We had shared our concerns with Transport Canada last spring with respect to the accommodation of small kirpans and remained in communication with them over this matter. By adopting the European Union standard on blade length, Sikh travelers in Canada will be able to wear kirpans with blades of up to 6cm in length. It is important to understand, however, that the size requirements will be enforced strictly and Sikh travelers wishing to travel with their kirpan meets the size requirements.
