Cyclone Fani hits Odisha and is considered one of the strongest tropical cyclones to make landfall in 20 years. The authorities say that the storm is expected to move northeast up the Indian coast towards Kolkata and Bangladesh, throughout Friday and on Saturday.
India categorized Fani as an “extremely severe cyclonic storm”. But the department says that it is likely to weaken over a period of the next six hours.
Makeshift camps which contain numerous displaced Rohingya refugees along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border are likely to face “massive destruction” from the tropical cyclone Fani. This has been warned by an aid organization.
When tropical storms hit, Bangladesh suffers flooding and damage because of being the low-lying country. This risks the lives of the refugees staying the camps, and making the residents, particularly at risk.
The storm hit Odisha this morning and has left its impact all over the state.
Strong winds were also seen in Bhubaneshwar, the capital of the state, parts of Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal too.
The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, Coast Guard and disaster management authorities have been informed about the calamity and are on the standby.
Hearing about this calamity, Bollywood celebrities came out and prayed for the safety of all the people staying in the affected areas. Celebrities like Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh and Harbhajan Singh are some among many others who are praying and sending prayers to the people in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh as cyclone Fani hit the areas.
