The Sangeet Natak Akademi instituted Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in 2006. This is given to the numerous artists who have proven their mettle in the fields of music, dance and drama. Each year, people upto the age of 40 years are eligible to recieve this award. Age of the will be calculated from 1st April of that year. There are numerous fields or categories which fall under the category of Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar. The categories are Music, Dance, Theatre, Other Traditional / Folk/ Tribal/ Dance/ Music/ Theatre and Puppetry and Contribution / Scholarship in Performing Arts. An Ustad Bismila Khan Yuva Puruskar is only given to 33 nominees in a year and not more than that. Every recipient of the Yuva Puraskar is awarded with a prize money worth Rs 25,000/- along with a tamrapatra which will be given under the seal of Akademi and signature of the chairman of the Akademi. Now, you must be thinking why we are giving you all such information that too about an award. Well, one of our famous and ace Punjabi singers has recieved this award and we are feeling so proud at this given point of time. That singer is none other than Lakhwinder Wadali. He recieved this honourable award for his prominent and notable work in the field of Punjabi folk music and helped in taking it to new heights. Lakhwinder Wadali was trained under the eye of his father, Puran Chand Wadali who is an ace singer himself. Lakhwinder's songs are a perfect mix of classical and the trending themes in the field of music. His collection of music is inclusive of Sufi Saints, romantic folk songs, ghazals, bhajans and bhangra too. Alaaps and taans are the most important elements in his music. He has done an album named Unpredictable (2007). Mukhtar Sahota and Nanina De Buhe are also inclusive in this album.Talking about his performance, he has performed with various top notch artists like Himesh Reshamia, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shanker Mahadevan, Mikka Singh, Shan, Shreya Ghoushal and Mohit Chauhan. He has also performed widely across the nation and across the borders too. Lakhwinder has been honoured with numerous awards previously too which include PTC Channel Punjabi Music Award for “Best Debut Album” by PTC Channel Punjabi in 2005, the “Best Sufi Singer of Punjab” which was given by Watno Dur Channel in Vancouver, Canada in 2005, the PTC Channel Punjabi Music Award for “Best Sufi Song” awarded by PTC Channel Punjabi (2007), the Best Singer Award given by Canadian Government in Toronto, Canada (2009), and the Hamdard Award (2013).
