Finally, the NDA government at the Center has waived off the huge GST on 'Langar' items from Sri Darbar Sahib to Sri Durgiana Temple, Hindustan Times reported. Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committe (SGPC) has welcomed the Union government decision and have also thanked the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for its efforts towards the decision. Moreover as part of this scheme, Rs 300 crore will be reimbursed to the Golden Temple which has payed a tax of this amount up till now. Its not just Darbar Sahib but all the religious institutions in entire nation those have been exempted from this tax. It is to inform you that the state government had already waived off its share of the GST on langar. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh welcomed the decision and said;
Though the move fell short of a GST waiver on 'langar', it will relieve the SGPC of the GST burden. The move to levy GST on 'langar' was ill-conceived at the outset. It is not fair to impose tax on religious institutions which have no independent source of income and are run and managed through donations.SGPC President Gobind Singh Longowal said this move will reduce the tax burden on the 'langar sewa'. The SGPC had earlier stated that the GST will put an additional tax burden of nearly Rs 10 crore for running the free meals service.
