It is was in 2003 when prominent Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi was first arrested for human trafficking. According to then and recent media reports, doing rounds on the net once again, the singer was asked to pull down his pants. A totally normal and legal procedure followed by police to identify body marks of every alleged person brought to the jail. It was in accordance with the 'Kursinama' formality, which states that relevant details of the accused must be jotted down. Daler Mehndi too had confirmed the same to TNS. He had stated then,
Mainu bahut gussa aiya but when I was told that this was a necessary formality, I took off my trousers.Not just this but, Mehndi was also asked to croon to his songs during the interrogations, also during investigation by superintendent of police. Confirming his stance the alleged singer then had quoted;
I am not mad that I should sing songs of my own accord. They told me they were my fans and that I should sing for them which I did.After 15 years Daler Mehndi has been convicted of human trafficking, he used to take money from people nearly 1 crore on the pretext of taking them abroad. According to a complainant, Bakhshish Singh, alleging that a similar deal took place with him but never matured and Mehndi failed to return the money. For which the pop singer was convicted last week and was also given bail minutes after conviction.
