Have you ever felt slamming your guy friends or your man for their irritable mood swings which you have to deal with? Well, the thought of them PMSing must have also popped up in your mind, and if you felt the same then your gut instinct might be true.
Yes! You read it right! Confused? But don’t worry! A study says that men also go through this syndrome but it is completely different as of women.
This is known as ‘IMS’ which stands for ‘Irritable Male Syndrome’ which are similar to the symptoms of PMS. And this is the reason that they act all moody sometimes. The term 'IMS' was coined by psychotherapist Jed Diamond which describes why men fall prey to hormonal fluctuations.
What exactly is IMS?
Irritable male syndrome (IMS) is a state frustration, anxiety, anger and hypersensitivity which occurs in males and is linked with biochemical changes, hormonal fluctuations, stress, and loss of male identity.
What causes IMS?
According to NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information),
“The irritable male syndrome (IMS) is a behavioural state of nervousness, irritability, lethargy and depression that occurs in adult male mammals following withdrawal of testosterone.”
There are many reasons that this mood swing occurs but the simplest one is variation in testosterone levels, closely followed by a steep rise in stress levels. Even slightest changes in diet and biochemical changes can make guys really grumpy and angry.
Secondly, the testosterone levels in men drop as they grow old, which can also be linked to his inwards moodiness.
However, the most interesting aspect of male PMS is that some get connected and feels the same which is felt by the woman of his life, during their PMS symptoms like anxiety, low self-esteem and irritation.
How can you help them out?
Almost every one of us, are not able to get when they go through this. Hence, these irritable outbursts are not identified for what they really are and can be easily misunderstood. If you feel like your guy can feel every emotion that you undergo during PMS, the very first thing you should do is have a word with him.
Talk to him about his feelings and try to find out the root cause of his worries and grumpiness. If things seem to get out of your control, it is advisable to seek medical attention as well. Sometimes, all it takes is a change in diet, medications to control hormone levels or simply a break from all the stress to feel okay again.
Other thing that you can do is, give him his own space and let him be free. Now, that you know that guys can also PMS, you need to be patient when you fall in this same situation.
