The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday suspended the Zimbabwe cricket team. This decision was taken when the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) was not able to keep the interference of the government away from the administration of the board.
Such a suspension where the entire team has been suspended has happened for the first time in any form of cricket.
Many former and current players of the team have shown disagreement and anger over this decision taken by the ICC.
Zimbabwe is an African team and has created numerous historic occasions in the game. Zimbabwe was temporarily banned from the test series in 2004 after the removal of the players because of Heath Streak’s dismissal. Later the ban was removed in 2005, and they played eight test matches.
But the Zimbabwe team could not play any test match till 2011, in spite of being fit and eligible.
Even during the recent world cup, the team could impress the board when they could not even qualify for the 2019 world cup.
Below is the detailed information about everything you should know about Zimbabwe being suspended from cricket.
WHAT WAS THE REAL REASON THAT ZIMBABWE GOT SUSPENDED FROM CRICKET
Zimbabwe cricket suspension happened on 18 July when the Zimbabwe board could not ensure that the government would no more interfere with the team playing cricket in the country. The global body of cricket issued a statement on Zimbabwe’s instant suspension after a unanimous decision was taken when the board failed to provide a clear process of elections. The decision was also taken when the team authorities could not assure any intrusion from the government in administering cricket.
ICC in its official statement said “
"Zimbabwe Cricket has been suspended with immediate effect. The ICC Board unanimously decided that Zimbabwe Cricket, an ICC Full Member, is in breach of Article 2.4 (c) and (d) of the ICC Constitution which imposes an obligation on Members to provide a process for free and democratic elections and to ensure that there is no government interference in its governance and / or administration for cricket respectively.”
DURATION OF ZIMBABWE’S SUSPENSION
Duration of the suspension has not been clearly mentioned by the ICC, but they will discuss this issue once again when they meet in October. During the period of these three months, if Zimbabwe still does not reinstate, African team Zimbabwe could be expelled from the game.
WHAT DOES SUSPENSION MEAN FOR THE ZIMBABWE CRICKET TEAM?
The decision of suspension has come as a huge blow to the cricket in Zimbabwe and ICC has also decided not to fund the sports in the country anymore. The team is not eligible to participate in any kind of ICC events which also includes the forthcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers which commence from 31st August. And T20 World Cup for men will be held in the month of October.
WHAT TEAMS IN THE PAST HAVE RECEIVED THE SAME DESTINY?
The Sri Lankan cricket team almost got suspended in the year 2015 because of government interference. Croatian Cricket Federation and the Zambia Cricket Union have also got a suspension from the ICC when they could not comply with the rules and regulations set by the board.
ICC has suspended many Associate Members in the past, and Nepal is still under the suspension. But the national team of Nepal is allowed to participate in ICC events while it was suspended. Even the United States of America participated in the events organized by ICC while they were suspended and expelled from June 2015 till January 2019.
The Moroccan Royal Cricket Federation has also suffered horribly after the team was expelled from the membership of the ICC after they were not able to meet the criteria of membership. This decision of the ICC brought the total number of members to 104.
