India celebrates National Education Day remembering its first Education Minister, Abul Kalam Azad


November 11 is celebrated as National Education Day since 2008 in India. This day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the first education minister of Independent India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. 

Famously known as Maulana Azad, he was the mind behind the development of India's IITs, IISc and School of Architecture and Planning. He was the one who came up with the idea to establish central educational bodies like UGC and AICTE.

Azad played an important role in the promotion of culture and literature through education. Famous educational academies like Lalit Kala Academy and Sahitya Academy were also established by him. 
He was the man who knew that though India got freedom from the Britishers, the majority of the population was still illiterate and he even became the flagbearer of adult literacy programs. 
He stressed the importance of secondary education and vocational training.
