India's first cashless island in Manipur
Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave us all a taste of being cashless during demonetization period, in 2016. But, now a whole Indian island has gone cashless, but rather in a good way. We are talking about Karand, now a small lake cashless island in Manipur that has implemented four of the government’s priority programs -- Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban and Rural), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, and for promoting digital payments.

The civil servants and bureaucrats of Karand awarded for implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), for innovation in public service and other priority initiatives of the Centre. But, all this didn’t happen overnight. There were collective efforts of the authorities as well as community members to make this work out.
Cashless Island: A Great Step Ahead!
An online channel launched to make people aware of digital payments, social media interventions for the purpose come out. Also, self-help groups and youth clubs roped in for community mobilization and parallel activities conducted on the island for Aadhaar enrollment and opening of bank accounts. Incentives provided for training towards digital payments and five POS machines installed on the island.
As a result, 92% of the bank accounts seeded with mobile and 70% of them were seeded with Aadhaar. The percentage of the electricity bills paid digitally increased from 78% to 97% in the last 20 months. The PM awarded Deputy Commissioner of the district of Karand for promoting digital payment.

Now we can say that the country is leading towards the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a digital and cashless India, just hope that he will not surprise us with another surprise like GST and demonetization making us cashless, clueless and helpless. Yippee! the cashless island!
