PUNJAB AND HARYANA'S TUSSLE OVER NAMING THE COMMON AIRPORT TO END SOON

Punjab's Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has stated in favor of naming the Chandigarh airport in memory of the great martyr of India’s freedom struggle behind legendary Bhagat Singh, as Shaheed Bhagat Singh Airport. Amarinder was talking to media persons at Punjab Police Academy in Phillaur when he made this statement. Punjab's statement comes a day after Union civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said in Chandigarh that the war of words over the naming of the Chandigarh international airport was uncalled for. There have been reports that Haryana, which is an accomplice state in the air terminal, isn't content with Punjab's request to name the new air terminal as Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh International Airport Mohali. Haryana had said that the airplane terminal could be named after Bhagat Singh however the Center must guarantee that the air terminal contains the word 'Chandigarh' and that's it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the civil air terminal at Chandigarh airport on September 11 last year. Prior to January 2016, Punjab Youth Congress workers were lathi-charged by police while they were walking to the air terminal to request a difference in name.
