Javed Akhtar Responds to Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Criticism, Affirms Stance on “Animal” Controversy
  • PublishedMarch 16, 2024

Renowned screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar has recently addressed filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s objections regarding his remarks on Vanga’s latest directorial venture, “Animal,” starring Ranbir Kapoor. In an interview with Mojo Story, Akhtar clarified his stance, asserting that while Vanga holds the right to create as many films as he desires, his concern lies with the societal impact of such narratives.

Akhtar emphasized that in a democratic society, filmmakers are entitled to exercise artistic freedom. However, he expressed apprehension about the potential ramifications of glorifying certain characters and themes, especially if they endorse troubling behaviors like those depicted in “Animal.”

The controversy ignited when Akhtar raised concerns about scenes in “Animal,” prompting a response from Vanga, who questioned Akhtar’s silence on similar themes in the web series “Mirzapur,” produced by Akhtar’s son Farhan. Akhtar dismissed the comparison, clarifying that his critique was directed towards societal implications rather than individual productions. He underscored the need to distinguish between his creative involvement and his son’s production endeavors.

As the discourse continues, both Akhtar and Vanga remain focused on their respective projects. Akhtar is currently engaged in writing the lyrics for “Lahore 1947,” while Vanga is gearing up for his upcoming films “Spirit” and “Animal Park.”
