Thalapathy Vijay Condemns Implementation of CAA, Urges Tamil Nadu Government to Resist
  • PublishedMarch 12, 2024

Tamil actor Thalapathy Vijay, also the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), expressed strong disapproval of the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) by the Central Government. Vijay, in his first political statement since forming the party, deemed the law incompatible with the social harmony in the country. The CAA, enacted four years ago, grants Indian citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

Thalapathy Vijay emphasized the need for leaders to ensure that the CAA is not enforced in Tamil Nadu, urging the state government to resist its implementation. The statement reflects concerns about the potential impact of the law on social cohesion and harmony in the region.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, echoing these sentiments, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attempting to gain political advantage by notifying the rules for the CAA ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Stalin criticized the BJP government’s alleged divisive agenda, claiming that the law, initially intended as a “beacon of humanity,” has become a tool of discrimination based on religion and race. Stalin accused the BJP of betraying Muslims and Sri Lankan Tamils, sowing seeds of division.

Despite opposition from democratic forces such as the DMK, Stalin claimed that the CAA was passed with the support of the AIADMK, which he referred to as the BJP’s “stooge.” He argued that the BJP had kept the law in abeyance, fearing public backlash.
