Ukraine Sinks Russian Warship Near Kerch Strait in Crimea
  • PublishedMarch 5, 2024

Ukraine has reported sinking a Russian warship, the Sergei Kotov, near the Kerch Strait in occupied Crimea. The HUR military intelligence agency in Kyiv claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that naval drones were used in the strike, causing damage to the vessel’s stern, right, and left sides before it sank. Dramatic footage of the incident shows Ukrainian kamikaze drones targeting the ship, resulting in a large explosion. The fate of the 60 crew members aboard the Sergei Kotov is unknown.

This marks another blow to Moscow’s naval power in the Black Sea, despite Ukrainian losses on land. Russian forces have been advancing on the eastern frontline, capturing the city of Avdiivka last month. However, at sea, Ukraine has successfully used home-produced drones to target and sink Russian warships. In February, Ukraine sank the heavy assault ship Caesar Kuznikov near Alushka, using the same Magura V5 naval drones deployed in this recent attack.

The losses have forced Russia to relocate much of its Black Sea fleet to the safer port of Novorossiysk. Pro-Putin commentators expressed dismay at the continued loss of warships, while Ukrainian officials celebrated the historic humiliation of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Ukraine’s long-term strategic objective includes degrading Russia’s military and naval assets in Crimea and disrupting the Kerch bridge connecting the peninsula with the Russian mainland. Ukraine has requested Germany’s long-range Taurus missile system for this purpose, but the request has been denied by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
