In a remarkable feat, Punjab emerged as the Best State in the prestigious annual Green School Awards presented by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). The accolade reflects Punjab’s commitment to environmental sustainability, with a record-breaking 4,734 schools from the state actively participating in the Green Schools Programme (GSP).

Sangrur, a district in Punjab, secured the Best District Award by recording an impressive 503 submissions, showcasing the highest level of commitment to eco-friendly practices. The awards were presented in New Delhi by CSE Director General Sunita Narain, with the ceremony witnessing the presence of key dignitaries.

This year marked a surge in Punjab’s enthusiasm, with 7,200 schools initially registering for the GSP. The state’s dedication was further underscored by the submission of green audit reports from 4,734 schools, an unprecedented level of participation in the program’s 19-year history. Out of these, 70 schools earned the esteemed ‘green’ rating by meeting the stringent criteria set by CSE.

Dr. Kulbir Bath, State Nodal Coordinator of Punjab State Council of Science and Technology (PSCST), expressed pride in Punjab’s achievement, highlighting that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann acknowledged and shared these results on his social media handles.

The Green Schools Programme evaluates schools based on their sustainable practices, including solid waste management, water and energy conservation, and efforts to protect the environment. Ludhiana stood out with the highest number of green schools, while Sangrur’s Government Primary Smart School in Bhattiwal Khurd village earned the ‘green school’ title.

Punjab’s recognition as the Best State, with Sangrur leading as the Best District, underscores the state’s commitment to fostering environmental consciousness and sustainable practices in its educational institutions.
