Winter Months Witness Surge in Respiratory Illnesses: Experts Unveil Preventative Measures
  • PublishedJanuary 4, 2024

In the wake of plummeting temperatures, healthcare experts shed light on the upsurge of respiratory infections during winter months. Driven by dry air and prolonged viral survival, cases of common cold and flu surge, inundating outpatient facilities. According to Dr. Akshay Budhraja from Aakash Healthcare, individuals with chronic respiratory conditions face exacerbated symptoms due to dry air and heightened irritants, amplifying breathing difficulties.

Dr. Neetu Jain of PSRI Hospital highlighted the decreased immunity against viruses in cold, arid conditions, prolonging the presence of viral droplets in the air and escalating transmission rates. Mayo Clinic’s insights emphasized the increased longevity of virus-containing droplets in drier air, augmenting upper respiratory tract infections.

To stave off these illnesses, experts urged adherence to meticulous hygiene, including frequent handwashing, avoiding face touching, and wearing masks. Additional advice comprised maintaining distance from infected individuals, staying hydrated, and opting for annual flu vaccinations.

For further prevention, Dr. Jain cautioned against indiscriminate antibiotic use and recommended maintaining a balanced diet alongside layered clothing to combat the winter chill.
