Delhi Braces for Farmers’ “Delhi Chalo” March, Police Tighten Security

The Delhi Police are preparing for a surge in activity related to the ongoing farmers’ protests. In response to calls for a “Delhi Chalo” march today, March 6th, security has been ramped up at key border points, railway stations, Metro stations, and bus stands.

Commuters are advised to be aware of potential traffic jams, particularly near the Singhu border where a large gathering of farmers has already been reported. While no border closures are planned, vehicle checks will be stricter.

“We are keeping a strict vigil at the Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders,” said Deputy Commissioner Jimmy Chiram. Although temporary barriers at Singhu and Tikri have been removed, police and paramilitary personnel remain deployed for 24/7 surveillance.

Additional security forces have also been stationed at public transport hubs anticipating farmers arriving by train and bus. Section 144, which prohibits gatherings, remains in effect across Delhi.

This escalation comes after the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Samyukta Kisan Morcha, leading farmer unions, called for a nationwide mobilization in Delhi. The call also includes plans for a four-hour railway blockade on March 10th in support of demands like guaranteed minimum support prices for crops. These protests follow a deadly clash last month between security forces and farmers at the Punjab-Haryana border, tragically resulting in the death of a 21-year-old farmer.
