India Achieves Milestone in Missile Technology: Successful Test of Agni-5 with MIRV Capabilities
  • PublishedMarch 13, 2024

India marked a significant achievement in missile technology with the successful flight test of the Agni-5 missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) capabilities. The test, conducted as part of ‘Mission Divyastra,’ demonstrated the missile’s ability to deploy multiple warheads and showcased India’s advancements in the field. The Agni-5, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), was launched from APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha, meeting all intended parameters.

Led by Sheena Rani, a missile specialist at DRDO’s Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) in Hyderabad, the project has propelled India into a select group of nations possessing such advanced missile technology. Sheena Rani, as the program director for Agni-5, played a pivotal role in the successful development of the missile with MIRV technology.

The Agni-5, powered by a three-stage solid fuel engine, boasts a range exceeding 5,000 km, making it a potent addition to India’s strategic capabilities. MIRVs enhance the missile’s destructive potential by allowing it to carry multiple warheads, providing greater flexibility in targeting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended their congratulations to the scientists at DRDO for achieving this milestone. The successful test underscores India’s commitment to bolstering its indigenous defence capabilities and staying at the forefront of technological advancements in the global arena.
