Indian American Leaders Confront Surge in Hate Crimes, Call for Action Against Terrorism
  • PublishedMarch 14, 2024

In a landmark meeting with US Department of Justice, FBI, and law enforcement officials, prominent Indian American community leaders in Silicon Valley address the alarming increase in hate crimes targeting Hindu places of worship. Highlighting concerns over terrorist activities on US soil against India, the leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of action against perpetrators. Recent attacks on over 11 temples in the Bay Area alone underscore the urgent need for collective action.

The meeting, led by community leader Ajai Jain Bhutoria and Sikh leader Sukhi Chahal, emphasized the necessity of safeguarding places of worship and addressing threats from groups such as Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). Urging awareness and action, the leaders proposed a Protecting all Places of Worship Forum (PPOW) under DOJ guidance.

The formation of a working group, agreed upon post-meeting, signifies a commitment to proactive safety measures and systematic reporting of hate crimes. Together, the Indian American community and law enforcement stand resolved to combat hate crimes and ensure the security of all places of worship.
