Manipur Faces Escalating Violence: Five Security Personnel Injured in Ambush, Four Civilians Killed
  • PublishedJanuary 2, 2024

In a distressing turn of events, Manipur has witnessed a surge in violence, exacerbating the already fragile situation in the region. Yesterday, unidentified militants targeted security personnel in Moreh town, injuring four police commandos and one Border Security Force (BSF) jawan in an ambush near the Myanmar border. This assault follows Monday’s tragic clash in Lilong, resulting in the loss of four innocent lives.

The assailants, firing RPGs at the state commandos during a routine search operation, inflicted injuries, further destabilizing the region. Consequently, the Manipur government has re-imposed curfew in Thoubal and Imphal West districts to quell unrest.

Addressing the situation, Chief Minister N Biren Singh urged the residents of Lilong to refrain from violence, emphasizing the imperative need for peace and harmony. Promising stringent action against those responsible for the civilians’ tragic demise, the government remains committed to restoring order and ensuring justice.

The recent escalation adds to Manipur’s ongoing ethnic tensions since May 3, stemming from protests over the demand for Scheduled Tribe status. With over 100 casualties and a substantial displacement count, urgent measures are imperative to mitigate further unrest and foster reconciliation.
