Naseeruddin Shah Expresses Disappointment in Hindi Cinema, Calls for Substance Over Commercial Success
  • PublishedFebruary 19, 2024

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah voiced his discontent with the state of Hindi cinema, stating that it disappoints him that filmmakers have been producing the same kind of films for the last 100 years. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Shah emphasized the need for films without a sole focus on financial gains. He shared his personal disinterest in contemporary Hindi films, stating that he has stopped watching them.

The 73-year-old actor urged serious filmmakers to take responsibility for portraying the reality of society rather than solely catering to commercial interests. He expressed concern that Hindi cinema lacks substance and criticized the industry for prioritizing financial success over meaningful content. Shah highlighted the success of Hindustani food worldwide due to its substance and drew a parallel, suggesting that Hindi films, lacking in substance, may soon lose their global appeal.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by filmmakers in portraying societal realities, Shah emphasized the importance of taking risks and standing up to authorities if necessary. He cited the examples of Iranian filmmakers who produced films despite government suppression and Indian cartoonist RK Laxman, who continued creating during the days of emergency. Shah concluded by expressing skepticism about the possibility of change in the current trajectory of Hindi cinema.
