However, the makers of Soorma have revealed that the Punjabi lad was not the first choice to play the hockey ace. In fact, the Baba of Bollywood, Ranveer Singh was first contacted for the role. He had refused due to prior commitments and date issues and the role was passed on to the Phillauri star.
Sandeep Singh, the man who has inspired the film’s story, went on record with a leading daily stating, “We wanted someone who looks real while playing me on screen. Diljit 'paggwala banda hai' (he is a turbaned man), main bhi hoon. Back in those days when we had started work on the project, Diljit paaji was not doing Hindi movies. He was a pure Punjabi artiste then. So, at that time, Ranveer Singh was the actor we were all keen on.”
Soorma is the debut production of actress Chitrangada Singh, who is leaving no stone unturned since she acquired the rights to the story almost four years ago. Talking about the producer, India’s former hockey captain said, "It took a lot of effort for Chitrangada Singh to put this project together. She met a lot of filmmakers, actors, and writers for the project.”
When questioned by a leading media company that how did they zero upon Dosanjh then? Sandeep replied; “Between 2016 and early 2017, Udta Punjab and Phillauri forced us to change our perception and rethink our decision. We eventually zeroed in on Diljit paaji; it was a near-unanimous decision. Today, if you see him on the field while shooting, he has transformed himself. He has put in a lot of effort to get his act right."
Soorma is being directed by the Saathiya, Bunty aur Babli and OK Jaanu- fame helmer, Shaad Ali and stars Tapsee Pannu and Angad Bedi in prominent roles. It is set to release on 29th June 2018.
