Born on December 26, 1899, in Sunam village of Sangrur district of Punjab. Udham Singh was one of the many freedom fighters who fill the youngsters with vigor and strength to do something for the nation. On this day in the year 1933, he was hanged on charges of murdering Michael O Dyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab. In India, the name of Sardar Udham Singh is recorded as a revolutionary of Punjab in the fight for India's independence. Udham Singh was born as Sher Singh in the village of Sunam in Sangrur district of Punjab. His parents died while he was still a child. He was taken away by Central Khalsa Orphanage, Putlighar. His father, Sardar Tehel Singh was a watchman in Jammu subdivision railway station and he named him Sher Singh. He had a brother too who was known as Mukta Singh At the age of seven, Udham lost both his parents. After the death of parents, both were kept in the central Khalsa orphanage in Amritsar. Orphanage people gave them new names, Sher Singh and Udham Singh. later Udham Singh changed his name to Ram Mohammed Singh Azad which is a symbol of unity in three major religions of India. In the year 1917, his brother sadhu too died. In 1918 Udham passed his matriculation examination and soon in 1919, he left the orphanage.
