Gagangyaan is India's first manned space flight which will send three people into space for six to seven days. The spacecraft will be kept in a low earth orbit of 300 to 400 km.
Minister of State for Atomic Energy and Space, Jitendra Singh while giving the details of the entire programme at the end of a conference said, GSLV Mk III, the vehicle with three stage heavy lift launch will be used for laucnhing Gagangyaan beause it has the capacity of essential playload.
He also added that before the final launch event, 2 unmanned Gagangyaan missions will be undertaken.
Mr Singh said, "The total programme is expected to be completed before 2022 with the first unmanned flight within 30 months. The mission will aim to send a three-person crew to space for a period of seven days. The spacecraft will be placed in a low earth orbit of 300-400 km. The programme is expected to cost less than Rs. 10,000 crore."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced about the Gagangyaan mission during his speech on the Independence Day. He had shared that by 2022 or before some young people from the nation will be unfurling the Tricolored flag in space.
Minister of State for Atomic Energy and Space said that the difficult programme will truly be a national attempt in collaboration with ISRO, academia, industry and other government and private organizations as partners.
Talking about the mission, Mr Singh further added, "The mission will make India the fourth nation in the world to launch a Human Spaceflight Mission."
