WHY DID INDIA OPT NOT TO PLAY FOR 1950 WORLD CUP?

As the craze for 21st FIFA World Cup is in the air, the upcoming event is to begin in Russia on June 14. But to the dismay, team blue has not qualified for the quadrennial competition. We all are aware of the fact that Indian football team has never featured in a single senior FIFA World Cup tournament other than the U-17 competition in 2017. It is to inform you that India has failed to qualify for 2018 World Cup after recording losses to Oman, Turkmenistan, Guam, and Iran during the qualifiers. But did you know that India had a chance to play the World Cup in 1950 and not just that but the entire trip was to be financed by the hosting nation. You must have heard the overrated story that India was not allowed to play as they wanted to play barefoot, well, that's incorrect. Therefore at that time, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) decided not to send the team all across the globe by ship even though Brazil was sponsoring the tour. Moreover, nations like Turkey, Scotland, Ireland, Portugal, France had also missed the tournament. On one end the AIFF was worried about its team fitness as it was a 90 minutes game for World Cup, whereas it was 70 minutes for Olympics for which the team had trained itself. In addition to it, it was also humiliating as India was just invited because other regional teams had withdrawn from the event. According to AIFF, it was senseless to send the team to a smaller event at that time.
