Israeli Strikes in Rafah Leave 37 Palestinians Dead, Hostages Freed in Special Forces Raid
  • PublishedFebruary 12, 2024

Israeli strikes in the southern city of Rafah have resulted in the death of at least 37 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported freeing two hostages, Fernando Simon Marman (60) and Louis Har (70), during a special forces raid. The hostages are in “good condition” at Sheba hospital in central Israel. Heavy bombing caused panic in Rafah, with mosques and houses targeted.

US President Joe Biden urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to launch a military operation in Rafah without a credible safety plan for the 1 million residents. Despite international concerns, Netanyahu expressed determination to proceed with a ground offensive, assuring safe passage for the 1.3 million displaced Palestinians.

Hamas warned that an advance into Rafah would jeopardize ceasefire negotiations and vowed to resist. Netanyahu insisted on targeting the remaining Hamas forces while ensuring civilian safety. The southern city, home to over half of Gaza’s population, has become the last major refuge amid the ongoing conflict.

The Gaza health ministry reported a total of 28,176 Palestinians killed and 67,784 injured since the conflict began in October. Netanyahu’s plans for a ground invasion prompted international concern, with Germany’s foreign minister emphasizing the plight of Gaza’s people.
