NATO Chief Warns Against Trump’s Call for Russian Attacks on Allies
  • PublishedFebruary 12, 2024

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg condemned former President Donald Trump’s recent statement inviting Russia to attack NATO member countries not meeting financial obligations. Stoltenberg emphasized that any suggestion of allies not defending each other undermines collective security and places soldiers at risk. The White House labeled Trump’s remarks “appalling and unhinged.”

Trump, at a South Carolina rally, claimed he would encourage Russia to attack NATO allies he deemed delinquent in their financial contributions. Stoltenberg reaffirmed NATO’s readiness to defend all members, expressing confidence in continued strong US-NATO relations regardless of the election outcome.

International leaders criticized Trump’s statements, with Poland’s defense minister underscoring NATO’s commitment of “one for all, all for one.” European Council President Charles Michel condemned such “reckless statements,” asserting they served Russian President Vladimir Putin’s interests.

EU Commissioner Thierry Breton highlighted the need for the EU to invest in its defense independently of US elections, countering Trump’s narrative on NATO spending. Critics, including Lord Peter Ricketts and Czech Republic’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský, questioned the credibility of Trump’s account and emphasized NATO’s strength amid increased security threats.

The NATO treaty guarantees mutual defense, and members agreed in 2014 to reach a 2% GDP defense spending target by 2024. As of 2022, seven of the 31 NATO countries met this goal. Trump’s past skepticism and calls to reassess NATO commitments have sparked concerns among Western allies.
