Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry Resigns Amid Ongoing Crisis
  • PublishedMarch 12, 2024

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned from his role as head of the Caribbean nation, according to the chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Irfaan Ali. The resignation follows an escalating crisis in Haiti marked by gang violence, political unrest, and an urgent need for humanitarian assistance. Henry’s resignation comes amid calls for a political transition and the establishment of a transitional presidential council to navigate the country towards elections.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has conducted widespread operations, raiding 30 locations across multiple states, including Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chandigarh, as part of efforts to dismantle terrorist-gangster networks. The NIA, working with state police forces, targeted locations associated with suspects identified through specific intelligence gathered during prior interrogations.

In other news, the United States is set to contribute an additional $100 million to an international force intended to help Haiti combat gang violence. The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, emphasized the need for a broad-based, inclusive, independent presidential council in Haiti to address immediate needs, facilitate the security mission’s deployment, and create conditions for free elections.

Haiti has been grappling with a humanitarian crisis, internal displacement, and widespread violence, leading to increased calls for international assistance and political stability. The situation remains complex, with ongoing challenges in security, governance, and the provision of essential services.
