Air India Pilot Sacked for Alcohol Consumption After International Flight
  • PublishedMarch 28, 2024

An Air India pilot has been terminated from service after testing positive for alcohol consumption following an international flight from Phuket to India. The pilot underwent a breathalyser test upon arrival in the country, revealing alcohol consumption. The captain, who operated the flight from Phuket to Delhi, faced immediate consequences for violating aviation safety regulations.

Airline sources emphasized their zero-tolerance policy towards such violations, stating that strong action had been taken against the pilot. Not only was the pilot dismissed from service, but the airline also intends to file a First Information Report (FIR) as operating a flight under the influence of alcohol constitutes a criminal offense. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified of the incident to ensure appropriate regulatory action.

According to reports, post-flight alcohol tests are standard procedure for flight crew following international flights, particularly those where alcohol is served onboard. However, for domestic flights within India, breathalyser tests are conducted before departure, as alcohol consumption is not permitted onboard.

Aviation regulations stipulate severe penalties for pilots who fail alcohol tests. A first-time failure results in a three-month suspension of the pilot’s license, while a second failure leads to a three-year suspension. In the event of a third failure, the pilot’s license is permanently revoked. These measures are in place to uphold safety standards and ensure the well-being of passengers and crew alike.
