UT Administration Seeks Extension for Tribune Flyover Project After HC Lifts Stay

UT Administration Seeks Extension for Tribune Flyover Project After HC Lifts Stay
  • PublishedMay 6, 2024

Following the Punjab and Haryana high court’s decision to vacate the 2019 stay on cutting trees for the Tribune Flyover project, the UT administration has reached out to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for an extension. In response, the ministry has requested a fresh proposal for the long-pending project.

The high court bench, while allowing UT to proceed with the project as it sees fit, also advised them to decide whether to engage the previous contractor or initiate fresh bidding. The administration, opting for the latter, sought an extension from the ministry, given the recent court developments and the expiration of the previous extension granted in 2019.

The ministry has sought clarification on the project and requested the court order, indicating thorough scrutiny before granting approval. Once approved, the administration aims to complete the project within 18 months post tender allotment.

Initiated in 2016, the Tribune Flyover, spanning 1.6 km, aims to alleviate traffic congestion around the bustling Tribune Chowk, accommodating over 1.5 lakh vehicles daily. Initially planned as a 7-km stretch, the project’s length was reduced to 3.5 km by the Centre and further truncated to 1.6 km by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The project, estimated at ₹137 crore, has seen various adjustments and is poised to address longstanding traffic issues in the area.
