Former Judges and Journalist Invite PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi to Public Debate on Lok Sabha Election 2024

Former Judges and Journalist Invite PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi to Public Debate on Lok Sabha Election 2024
  • PublishedMay 9, 2024

Former Supreme Court judges Madan B Lokur and AP Shah, along with senior journalist N Ram, have invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to participate in a public debate on the ongoing Lok Sabha election 2024. In their invitation letter, they expressed concerns that the public has only been exposed to allegations and challenges without receiving meaningful responses from either side.

Highlighting the importance of citizens hearing directly from political leaders, the letter emphasized the need for a non-partisan and non-commercial platform for this discourse. The invitation suggested that such a debate would significantly strengthen the democratic process, especially considering India’s status as the world’s largest democracy.

Madan B Lokur, AP Shah, and N Ram proposed that the terms of the debate, including the venue, duration, moderators, and format, could be agreed upon by both parties. They also provided the option for the prime minister and Rahul Gandhi to nominate representatives if they are unable to participate themselves.

Madan B Lokur is a former judge of the Supreme Court, AP Shah is a former chief justice of the Delhi High Court, and N Ram is a senior journalist and former editor-in-chief of The Hindu.
