Punjab and Haryana HC Orders Post-Mortem of Accused in Custody Death Case
  • PublishedMay 9, 2024

The Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) has directed a fresh post-mortem examination of Anuj Kumar, a resident of Fazilka who allegedly died by suicide while in Mumbai police custody on May 1. Anuj was arrested on April 23 in connection with a firing incident outside actor Salman Khan’s house.

The court’s decision came in response to a plea filed by Anuj’s mother, Reeta Devi, who alleged that her son was “eliminated under a conspiracy.” Seeking clarity and justice, Reeta Devi requested a new post-mortem examination to rule out any possibility of foul play. She emphasized the importance of ensuring the preservation of her son’s body to prevent decomposition and the loss of crucial evidence.

Anuj Kumar was one of the four accused involved in the firing incident on April 14, according to the Mumbai police. While an autopsy was initially conducted in Mumbai, the HC’s order reflects a pursuit of transparency and accountability in the investigation.

Reeta Devi’s plea underscores the significance of conducting a thorough examination to ascertain the circumstances surrounding her son’s death accurately. The court’s intervention aims to provide her with the necessary reassurance and enable her to pursue appropriate legal remedies.
