Delhi High Court Dismisses PIL Seeking Arvind Kejriwal’s Release, Imposes Fine

Delhi High Court Dismisses PIL Seeking Arvind Kejriwal’s Release, Imposes Fine
  • PublishedApril 22, 2024

The Delhi High Court has rejected a plea seeking the release of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on “extraordinary interim bail” in all criminal cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate and the State until the end of his tenure. The court imposed a fine of ₹75,000 on the petitioner, stating that Kejriwal is in judicial custody as per court orders.

Filed by a fourth-year law student under the name ‘We the People of India,’ the plea was deemed not maintainable by the court, asserting that extraordinary interim bail cannot be granted in pending cases against a person in high office.

Senior Advocate Rahul Mehra, representing Kejriwal, labeled the PIL as ‘impermissible’ and ‘misguided,’ accusing the petitioner of politicizing the court. Mehra highlighted previous dismissals of similar pleas by the same bench, emphasizing the misuse of judicial processes for political agendas.

The plea had cited concerns over Kejriwal’s safety in Tihar Jail among hardened criminals. The court reiterated its stance on maintaining judicial decorum and declined the petitioner’s request.
