Tensions Escalate at Punjab-Haryana Border as Tear Gas Deployed; Government Invites Farmers for Talks Amidst Rising Concerns
  • PublishedFebruary 21, 2024

Amidst escalating tensions at the Punjab-Haryana border, tear gas was deployed as protesting farmers clashed with security forces. The fourth round of talks in Chandigarh witnessed the emergence of a five-year, A2+FL+50 per cent contract offer, yet the situation remains volatile.

Dramatic visuals depict a standoff at the Shambhu border crossing, with farmers forming a human chain against heavy earth-moving machines and security forces equipped with riot gear. Haryana Police, having fired tear gas, issued warnings to the farmers, citing concerns of armed confrontation.

The farmers, undeterred by police measures, continue their march towards Delhi, prompting heightened security at key border crossings and the deployment of Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRADs) for crowd control. Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda has called for further talks, expressing the government’s readiness to discuss all issues, including the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

However, farmer leaders rejected the government’s offer to purchase select crops at the old MSP, citing inadequacy and exclusion of various crops. The demand for MSP based on the Swaminathan Commission’s C2+50 per cent formula, along with additional appeals for loan waivers and withdrawal of police cases, further fuels the ongoing dispute.

The farming community emphasizes the need for a comprehensive resolution that addresses their concerns, ensuring a peaceful and equitable future for all stakeholders.
