Punjab Government Addresses Security Concerns in Prisons, Initiates Installation of Full Body Scanners in Six Jails
  • PublishedFebruary 3, 2024

In a significant move to enhance security measures within the state’s correctional facilities, the Punjab government has recently floated tenders for the installation of state-of-the-art full body scanners in six prominent jails. The decision follows a 2022 report by the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, which highlighted the absence of such scanning technology in Punjab jails.

The targeted facilities for this technological upgrade include Central Jails at Bathinda, Amritsar, and Kapurthala, High Security Jail in Nabha, and District Jails at Sangrur and Sri Muktsar Sahib. The initiative gains added momentum after the Punjab and Haryana High Court drew attention to the issue during a suo motu hearing related to the televised interviews of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi from within a prison.

According to the tender specifications, the selected body scanners must possess the capability for reliable and accurate detection of metallic and non-metallic articles, weapons, explosives, narcotics, and other contraband items concealed within body cavities or on the body surface. The software accompanying the scanners is expected to automatically detect and highlight any contraband, including weapons, electronics, and drugs, ensuring ease of operation.

Moreover, the scanners should offer comprehensive imaging, allowing visibility up to the sole of a person’s shoes while simultaneously revealing any hidden objects within. This strategic investment aligns with the government’s commitment to fortify prison security and curtail unauthorized items within correctional facilities.

The implementation of full body scanners marks a pivotal step towards modernizing prison infrastructure and upholding the safety and security of both inmates and prison staff.
